The old approach is to surround the passengers with strong material that absorbs energy while collapsing.  That means more weight and size.  An alternative is to put these lightweight passenger cars on different roads than the SUVs and trucks.  That avoids collisions with vehicles that outweigh the cars by an order of magnitude.</description>
